Baptism and Services of Thanksgiving for the life of a child

When all the people were being baptised, Jesus was baptised too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. Luke 3: 21-22

We are glad to welcome babies and children through Baptism into the church as it marks the beginning of a lifetime of discovery about their Christian faith . When a child is baptized, water is poured over them to signify a commitment to a fresh start and learning what it means to follow Jesus. Promises are made on behalf of the child by parents and godparents who will be able to support the child through prayer and guidance over the years, helping them to learn about faith and supporting them in the choices they make. A child will have many questions as they go through life and some of them are easier to answer than others so knowing that there are adults to help them along the way can be invaluable.
Adults who come to faith later in life may wish to make a public declaration of their intention to follow Christ and it is never too late to be Baptized. If you were baptized as an infant you can choose Confirmation as a way of affirming your commitment to continuing a life of faith.
Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child may be a more appropriate service for your child if you want to leave a decision on Baptism for them to make when they are older. It can also be used to welcome a new born or recently adopted child into your family.

Weddings

We love to celebrate with couples who are making promises of a lifelong commitment to one another as they express their love for each other in the sacred space of a church. Making vows before God that you will each continue to love and care for the other throughout the ups and downs of life is a significant moment expressing a deep commitment to married life together. There will be many plans to be made to make your wedding day special and we can help you with those preparations. As well as the practical arrangements that need to be made we invite you to a marriage preparation session which helps you, as a couple, explore the promises you will be making – it is a light-hearted session with topic outlines that give you the space to share your hopes and fears as well as your dreams with one another in a personal space.

Please note that there are specific legal requirements that need to be met in order for you to be able to marry in our churches and there are set fees that are payable for the service itself. Your service can be tailored to suit you (subject to the legal requirements that must be included in a church wedding) and we are also able to offer the services of a choir and bell ringing team.

Funerals

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Allowing people to come together as they mourn a loved family member or friend is an important part of our grieving process. You can arrange for the service to be held in church, at the graveside, or at the crematorium and it can be as simple as you wish or a full celebration of the life that was lived. We know how difficult it is when someone you have known and loved dies and there is a great deal that needs to be done. We can support you with practical help as well as our prayers and we work closely with your chosen Funeral Director to help you through the day.

A minister will meet with you to help plan the service that will enable you to say goodbye in an appropriate way to your loved one. Meetings can be in person if you are local but can also be held via video call or telephone if you are making arrangements from some distance away. We always aim to keep in touch for a time after the service and offer support in whatever way we are able.

We are also happy to meet with you to discuss and make arrangements for your own funeral service if you would like to leave a plan for others to follow when the time comes.
